Richard Bruce
Director, Scripps-PARC Institute for Advanced Biomedical
Sciences
Palo Alto Research Center (PARC)
Dr. Richard Bruce manages PARC's biomedical systems research area and directs the Scripps-PARC Institute for Advanced Biomedical
Sciences. This partnership combines PARC's physical, mathematical, information, and engineering expertise with The Scripps Research Institute's life science expertise.
Under Bruce's direction, PARC is bringing radical new approaches to substantive problems in medical diagnostics and drug discovery. Researchers are delivering novel instrumentation and information systems for label-free detection of molecular interactions, protein identification in complex samples, and rapid detection of peripheral cancer cells.
Since joining PARC in 1982, Bruce has worked on a broad range of research including electronic materials, semiconductor processing
and devices, integrated circuit design, and hardware
and software systems. He managed PARC's Computer Science Laboratory and later served as president of two PARC spin-offs based on his work: LiveWorks,
and PlaceWare (which was later acquired by Microsoft to become LiveMeeting).
Bruce received a B.A., M.A.,
and Ph.D. in Physics from the University of California
at Santa Barbara. He is also an Adjunct Professor at
the Scripps Research Institute.
