Morad Behandish

Morad Behandish conducts research on developing the next generation of mathematical models, computational representations, and algorithms for computer-aided design, analysis, and manufacturing (CAD/CAE/CAM) of mechanical systems, model-based systems engineering, interoperability semantics and protocols, and fundamental design automation.

Prior to joining PARC, he worked on various problems at the crossroad of mechanical engineering, computer science, and applied mathematics. For the most part, he studied functional, implicit, and analytic methods in geometric modeling and computing, kinematics and spatial reasoning, protein engineering, digital prototyping, and human-computer interaction.

Morad earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering along with a Master’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Connecticut in 2016, where he developed theoretical and computational tools for functional geometric modeling, and explored their applications to interactive haptic-assisted mechanical assembly, interactive protein docking, and digital design and manufacturing.

In his last two years of graduate education, Morad received two best paper awards in consecutive ASME design engineering conferences, another best paper award in SIAM/ACM solid and physical modeling, a prestigious entrepreneurship award from Innovation Quest (iQ) business competition, a graduate research competition award from UConn, and a leadership award for long-term services to the graduate engineering community. Later, he spent a year as a postdoctoral research fellow at the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) affiliated with UC Berkeley, studying interoperability of design and manufacturing systems.

Morad enjoys the outdoors, particularly caving, climbing, white-water rafting, and (sometimes) hiking activities.
