Lab Seeds
Lee Bruno, Innovation Pipeline, September 25, 2007
Excerpts from the post:
Palo Alto Research Center is a household name among engineers, entrepreneurs and local historians. It’s the birthplace of many technologies that changed the computer industry. Of course, there are also those innovations that PARC missed.
Mark Bernstein, president and director of PARC, believes the research institution’s new program, StartUP@PARC.com, will open up new opportunities and add the pieces (and focus) it lacked in the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s.
...Bernstein says there’s been a tremendous amount of interest from VCs and entrepreneurs on new lab spinoffs. He says that got PARC thinking about formalizing a program to help very early-stage startups with technology challenges that match up areas of PARC competencies and help address those problems with its 160 researcher team.
“Typical startups don’t have the research capacity of what we have here at PARC.”
...The real proof will be successful technologies from both institutions and that will take time. And these days of short product-cycle times and attention spans, patience is hard to come by.
