Artist Statement  

A self-taught and ardent metal sculptor, I use an oxyacetylene welding torch to fuse recycled metals and other discarded materials into bold objects of strength and beauty. These pieces spring from an intimate and personal exposure to Syrian, African, and American cultures. These cross-cultural influences inspire a sense of pride and gratitude and give face, form, and meaning to my work.
 
The materials I use to create with rarely relate to the objects original intended purpose. In concert with my perception, the shape and texture of the found metal influence the final project. By shifting the function of a familiar object, my artwork can be enjoyed on various levels. Guided by intuition and controlled by self-taught skills, my finished sculptures include the familiar from an unfamiliar point of view.
 
Applying organic and industrial materials - steel, copper, brass, feathers, bones, beads, yarn, paint, and glass - these mixed media constructions combine elements of sculpture, painting, and collage. My raison d'être is to alter old, discarded materials and create new, sensuous, and intriguing objects that arouse emotion, thought, discussion, and interaction.
