Current continuous glucose measurement (CGM) detectors have inherent limitations that constrain their implant longevity and their accuracy at low glucose concentrations. Foremost, their electrochemical detection-enzyme is consumed during use and creates toxic byproducts that initiate a rejection response. We propose a new CGM approach that is appropriate for a miniaturized subcutaneous CGM implant with an extended lifetime. It relies on the differential determination of the reflective index in a double chamber etalon. By the use of appropriate filtering we achieved glucose specificity and good sensitivity even at low glucose concentrations, as well as intrinsic temperature, light intensity and alignment compensation.
