Clean water
PARC has invented a novel method for creating, conditioning, and separating suspensions without the use of a filtration barrier. The clean water team is actively working on desalination and several other efforts, and is seeking a well-rounded intern to contribute to our evolving water quality characterization effort.
This project offers an opportunity to work with diverse instruments used for water characterization. The project will integrate a continuous flow electro-coagulation (EC) subsystem into the in-line separator system. In EC a continuous stream of metal ions is released into the source water. These ions act as coagulants and initiate aggregation of suspended particles within the source water through Coulomb screening and through the formation of insoluble metal hydroxide precipitates that act as seed particles for aggregation. Once the suspended particles have grown to the right size and morphology, they can be removed from the source water using PARC’s separator.
Responsibilities include:
- Design and optimization of the flow cell using computational CFD tools
- Design and build of fluidic part of the EC subsystem
- Design and build of the electrical part of the EC subsystem
- Testing of the EC subsystem using different types of source waters
- Integration of the EC subsystem into the in-line particle separator
- Testing of the complete system using selected source waters
For the right candidate, this experience will provide many opportunities to both invent and publish.
