Dr. J.J. Garcia-Luna-Aceves also recently recognized as a Fellow of the AAAS.

2 March 2011

Palo Alto, California – PARC (Palo Alto Research Center, a Xerox Company), a premier center for commercial innovation, today announced that Principal Scientist Jose Joaquin ("J.J.") Garcia-Luna-Aceves has been awarded the IEEE Computer Society’s 2011 Technical Achievement Award.

Given to only five recipients, this prestigious award recognizes outstanding and innovative contributions – within the past 10-15 years – to the fields of computer and information science and engineering or computer technology. Dr. Garcia-Luna-Aceves was recognized for his "pioneering contributions to the theory and design of communication protocols for ad-hoc wireless networks". The IEEE Computer Society, considered the world's leading organization of computing professionals, will present the award at a special dinner on May 25 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

"We are very pleased to recognize someone of Dr. Garcia-Luna-Aceves’ caliber," said Thomas Conte, chairman of the IEEE Computer Society Awards Committee. "His pioneering contributions in the areas of wireless and ad-hoc networks have made a profound impact on the industry."

Dr. Garcia-Luna-Aceves currently leads research on ad-hoc and wireless networking for multiple industry and government clients at PARC. He is also a Jack Baskin Professor of Computer Engineering at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he leads the Computer Communication Research Group dedicated to basic and applied research in computer communication. Dr. Garcia-Luna-Aceves also previously held roles in corporate R&D at Sun Labs and NOKIA.

Dr. Garcia-Luna-Aceves holds over 35 patents and has published more than 400 articles – including numerous award-winning papers – on adaptive routing algorithms; multicasting and broadcasting; multipath and quality-of-service routing; transmission scheduling; link control; collision avoidance and resolution; modeling; topology control; network-supported collaboration; and network systems, architectures, and security.

"While J.J.’s work in networking is unparalleled, it’s his connection to industry, academia, and government that best represents what’s special about PARC people and its business of innovation today," observed Steve Hoover, CEO of PARC. "We are so lucky to have J.J.’s expertise and experience here, helping not only our clients make major breakthroughs, but drawing and nurturing the next generation of networking researchers as well."

In addition to this recent IEEE honor, Dr. Garcia-Luna-Aceves was recently named Fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) because of his efforts toward "advancing science applications that are deemed scientifically or socially distinguished". He is also a Fellow of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) and the IEEE.
