Reconstructions of the AlN(0001) surface

Reconstructions of the AlN(0001) were studied experimentally by STM (at CMU) and theoretically by first-principles total energy calculations (at PARC). Based on the experimental results and on first principles calculations it is argued that the reconstructions observed under Al-rich conditions involve a laterally contracted Al adlayer structure similar to that previously proposed for GaN(0001).
