PolyBot and the PolyKinetic(tm) System: A modular robotic platform for education
Modular robotics has been an active area of research for the last decade. In this paper, we argue that it is also provides an excellect platform for educational purposes. PolyBot is a modular reconfigurable robot developed at PARC. The PolyKinetic System provides a robotic scripting language and programming environment for controling this robot. Based on our own experience with mentoring high school students for the last three years, and in running a tutorial for robotic researchers at IROS03, we show that, PolyBot and the PolyKinetic System can be effective for educational activities at multiple levels. Examples include: playing, exploring, building, programming, competing, and most of all, learning while having fun.
