Virtual worlds & the future of education

While virtual worlds are flourishing in the area of entertainment, academics, game developers and educators are beginning to explore the application of virtual worlds to education. Virtual worlds in their current forms are already good for learning basic social skills, team-building and leadership skills, and digital media literacy. Furthermore, recent education-centered virtual worlds are beginning to demonstrate how traditional subjects like science and history can be taught through this new medium, which students find fun and engaging. However, the highly collaborative nature of learning in virtual worlds may also conflict with current individualistic methods of assessment in public schools.
