Providing expertise and infrastructure to turn a vision into reality

Innovators from entrepreneurs to large corporations are trying to create revolutionary technologies to address white spaces in their market or to cement their leadership position. But in the rapidly evolving technology market, challenges lie in how quickly they can turn an idea into a working prototype.

PARC has over 40 years of experience in building systems to demonstrate the potential of novel devices, processes, and technologies. PARC is much more than a turnkey design firm: we specialize in novel device invention, design, simulation, and fabrication, as well as building hardened commercial prototypes including packaging, electronics, embedded software, and mobile or computer applications.

Our expertise ranges from hardware and software to social science. Applying a multidisciplinary approach utilizing expertise from different areas, our teams of scientists and engineers can deliver technology solutions that help our clients showcase their vision to investors, venture capitalists, government, or early customers.

From startups to large corporations, our clients face unique challenges at different stages of their product development cycles. We provide services such as proof of concept, application development, and full system prototyping. Our fully integrated on-site development and prototyping infrastructure includes Class 10 clean rooms, LPCVD, PECVD, PVD, ALD, MOCVD and other deposition tools, lithography, DRIE, packaging, electronic and optoelectronic testing, and full 3D and model machining.

We have a wide network of vendors and manufacturers of materials, parts, and equipment. We can refer our clients to appropriate scale-up partners so they can stay connected with the right resources for continued success in the market. We can also help validate technologies to support due diligence activities for funding or mergers and acquisitions (M&A) initiatives.

Client profiles

Inventors

Inventors have great visions but may lack resources to bring them to reality. We work with inventors who want to validate their technologies through proof of concept.

Client success story: PARC worked with a small startup which had patents on a novel display technology but had no expertise or infrastructure to build backplanes to prove the technology. We helped build a prototype that demonstrated the technology using a manufacturable process. In addition, we introduced the startup to a large multi-national electronics company, and gave advice to both parties that subsequently resulted in a successful acquisition.

Venture capitalists and CTOs of startups

Startup companies often operate on tight schedules. Their success depends on quick execution of their plans, but they may not have all the resources and infrastructure necessary to complete their tasks. PARC has a wide range of expertise as well as on-site development and prototyping infrastructure. We partner with startups to help them execute their plans in the most optimal way.

Client success story: A company with a novel biometric identification technology came to PARC to gain our expertise in reducing a large electro-mechanical system to a flat, solid-state device. Through multiple engagements, we helped identify the right technology roadmaps and development plans, and built prototypes to prove the technologies along the way. As a result of our partnership, the company successfully developed more accurate and robust products that met government certification requirements. It has been acquired by a Fortune 500 company which later engaged us to help move the technology to market quickly.

Large corporations

Global competition is intensifying and the technology landscape is changing rapidly. One way to be successful in this tough business environment is through open innovation. Companies that embrace the power of open innovation will have tremendous opportunities to create innovative ideas and accelerate time to market.

Client success story: Procter & Gamble, the world's largest consumer products company, is a recognized leader in open innovation and a PARC client. When P&G identified compelling growth opportunities in consumer electronics, it also recognized the need for expertise beyond its in-house capabilities to help deliver on those opportunities. PARC brought to the table a breadth of complementary expertise and ability to innovate within industry constraints and market economics, and helped with product roadmaps, technology evaluation, and prototype development.

Government agencies

PARC partners with research labs, universities, and enterprises to address the full spectrum of government project outcomes, from exploring concepts to delivering full-featured prototypes into the field.

Client success story: Under a contract funded by the U.S. government's Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), together with the Army Research Laboratory's Flexible Electronics and Display Center (FEDC), PARC developed a portable direct view digital x-ray camera with integrated flexible sensor, display, and user-interface. The units can be used for applications such as counter-Improvised Explosive Devices (c-IED), battlefield medicine, and non-destructive testing. The partnership is currently in its third round of development and PARC is making technical and user-interface improvements as a result of field testing.
