Sean R. Garner

Job: scientist, leadership
Sean Garner is Vice President and Director of the Hardware Systems Laboratory (HSL) at PARC. HSL comprises physicists, engineers and materials scientists, focusing on: advanced manufacturing, including deposition of non-newtonian fluids and multi-material additive manufacturing; electrochemical energy conversion; manipulation of electromagnetic radiation with metamaterials-based techniques; and advanced sensors and sensor networks. Previously at PARC, Sean led a research group focusing mainly on energy, in areas such as silicon solar cell design and renewable liquid fuels. Sean was also Energy Program Manager, overseeing PARC's portfolio of energy projects, and more recently Senior Director of Business Strategy, representing technologies across PARC’s hardware portfolio to customers. Prior to PARC, Sean earned a Ph.D. in physics from Cornell University, where he worked on improving sensitivity in magnetic resonance force microscopy, and then was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University where he studied slow and stopped light in Bose-Einstein condensates.
