Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy
Maverick Photographers spent eight months documenting school life at the Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy (HMCRA), an urban elementary school located in the heart of the Castro district in San Francisco.
The school strives to promote social justice, academic excellence, tolerance, nonviolence, and civil rights, and reflects a celebration of diversity and home-school-community connections.
In 2008, Sande Leigh, the school’s principal, retired after 35 years as an educator and leader in San Francisco. Concerned about the direction of the school without Ms. Leigh’s guidance, HMCRA’s parents and teachers gave the Maverick group full access (meetings, events, classroom, playground) to photograph the environment and the children. In parallel and in tandem with the visual documentary, they worked together to define and record the educational philosophy of HMCRA.
