Innovative technology for produced water treatment

This paper describes an emerging water treatment technology for removal of suspended particles, including oil emulsions, bio organisms, and floc from source waters. Dissolved contaminants may be precipitated or adsorbed prior to removal. This novel technology operates purely by fluid dynamics, without the need for a filtration barrier. It uses centrifugal force to create transverse flow patterns in a curved channel to separate a suspension of particles into a waste stream and a clear effluent stream. Unlike existing hydrocyclones and centrifuges, which require particles in the suspension to have a different density from the liquid medium, this technology can also address neutrally buoyant suspensions. Benefits include no moving parts, low energy, high scalability, small footprint, continuous-flow operation, high modularity in construction, and low cost in materials and TCO. Results for efficient removal of oil from water, dissolved hydrocarbon, scaling agents, dissolved silica, and algae are discussed.
