PARC Innovation Lab
Come behind the scenes at PARC to learn The Business of Breakthroughs. Our clients often ask us to teach them “the PARC way”: the human-centered technology innovation methods behind many world-changing inventions—from laser printing to contextual intelligence and printed electronics. Now executives with responsibility for innovation can turbocharge their effectiveness by participating in this exclusive, immersive lab, whether their business is technology or just depends on it.
Let PARC inventors and social scientists guide you through putting theory into practice, with hands-on exercises to reinforce short lectures. You will also learn from a series of guest speakers from PARC labs sharing the latest on their leading-edge research and how it is being applied to the challenges of our age. We place a high value on bringing together experienced leaders from diverse business backgrounds, reinforcing everyone’s learning through rich discussions both inside and outside the classroom.
At the PARC Innovation Lab you will discover how to unleash creativity, experiment efficiently, explore new business models, and manage innovation in your own organization. From translating insights into groundbreaking products and services to building a more effective innovation culture, you will come away with a wealth of practical approaches you can apply immediately.

8:30 a.m. Arrival at PARC: Registration and breakfast 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Welcome Orientation Elements of Effective Innovation We discuss the variety of innovation approaches in use, and what helps or impedes their effectiveness at participants’ companies. We present PARC’s framework for innovation management, including an overview of key principles, processes, tools, and metrics. PARC Innovation in Practice—with Guest Scientist Explore: Gain Empathy Walking in Your Customers’ Shoes Critical to effective innovation management is deciding what the focus of innovation should be. PARC invented corporate ethnography, the science of discovering high-value market needs by observing customers in context. Through hands-on team exercises, you will discover the value of expanding your mental models and developing empathy for customers. 12:30 p.m. Lunch 1:30 - 5:00 p.m. Ideate: Insights Inspire Solutions Although everyone has experienced brainstorming sessions, there are techniques that improve the number and quality of ideas a session produces. You will practice many techniques for more effective ideation, including using deep insights as “fodder” and—perhaps counter-intuitively—constraining the ideation activity to stimulate creativity. PARC Innovation in Practice—with Guest Scientist Prototype: Rapid Learning Loops Every organization wants to maximize its Return on Innovation Investment. A key method for balancing breakthrough innovation with smart risk management is through fast-learning loops of rapid prototyping. Again in teams, you will practice iterating through a challenge, improving your solution by incorporating customer feedback into design. 5:00 - 5:30 p.m. Tour of PARC Discover PARC’s storied history of pioneering innovation, from our original mission to invent “the office of the future”, to our current leading role in Open Innovation.
